The Whitsundays are a dream destination for families, calm turquoise waters, soft white beaches, and endless opportunities for fun and connection. Whether your kids are ocean lovers, adventure seekers, or sandcastle architects, there’s something here for everyone.
Onboard Summer Jo, we love welcoming families aboard our sailing adventures as we are a family-run vessel. The Whitsundays are one of the safest and most beautiful places in the world to explore by boat, and we make sure every day on the water is packed with discovery, laughter, and memories that last a lifetime.
Why the Whitsundays Are Perfect for Families
Sailing through the Whitsunday Islands is like stepping into a real-life postcard, except here, you’re not just looking at the view; you’re living it.
The calm, protected waters mean smooth sailing and safe swimming, while the endless coral reefs and beaches make every stop an adventure. From spotting sea turtles to paddleboarding in quiet bays, kids (and grown-ups!) quickly fall in love with life at sea.
Beach Days at Whitehaven & Hill Inlet
A family trip to the Whitsundays wouldn’t be complete without visiting Whitehaven Beach, seven kilometres of pure silica sand that’s soft, cool, and perfect for barefoot adventures.
We love taking our guests to Betty’s Beach and the Hill Inlet Lookout, where families can enjoy gentle hikes, breathtaking views, and the mesmerizing swirls of turquoise and white below. The beach here is safe for swimming and playing, and it’s one of those places kids never forget.
Snorkelling and Underwater Discovery
The Whitsundays sit in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, making them an incredible place for family snorkelling adventures.
Even in the shallow bays, you can spot colourful coral gardens, friendly fish, and maybe even a sea turtle gliding by. We provide gear and guidance so everyone, from confident swimmers to first-time snorkelers, can safely explore the underwater world.
Top family snorkel spots:
Mackerel Bay (Hook Island) – calm, clear, and full of turtles.
Blue Pearl Bay (Hayman Island) – perfect for seeing vibrant fish and coral just a few metres below the surface.
Luncheon Bay, Border Island – peaceful, photogenic, and feels like your own private island.
Fun Above the Water - SUP Boarding and Beach Games
When it’s time to dry off, there’s still plenty to do! We always have stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) on board, which are great for exploring calm bays or just having fun close to the boat.
Families often love anchoring near secluded beaches where we can spend time swimming, picnicking, and playing beach games in the sun. It’s all about enjoying the ocean at your own pace.
Sunset Moments & Starry Nights
Some of the most memorable moments happen at the end of the day, when the sun dips behind the islands and the water glows gold. Families gather on deck to watch the sky change colours, sharing snacks, laughter, and stories from the day’s adventures.
At night, away from city lights, the stars put on a spectacular show. It’s the perfect time to unwind, reconnect, and enjoy the simple magic of being together on the sea.
