Sustainable tourism

At Whitsunday Expeditions, we’re committed to protecting the Great Barrier Reef and Whitsunday Islands through responsible, reef-safe operations.
Our Sustainability Actions
We are proud to operate SV Summer Jo in one of the most spectacular and delicate marine environments in the world. We understand our responsibility to protect and preserve this incredible ecosystem for future generations. Our liveaboard dive charters are designed to showcase the reef in a way that is environmentally responsible, educational and deeply respectful of Sea Country.
We are actively working towards enhanced Eco and Climate Action Certifications, reflecting our commitment to responsible operations, reef-safe practices, and continuous improvement in our environmental footprint. Our guests are invited to not only enjoy the reef, but to understand it — its history, culture, and ongoing conservation.

Walking the talk: Sustainable Operations
Our sustainability goals focus on reducing our environmental impact, supporting reef research, and educating guests on how to protect the Great Barrier Reef.
-
Waste Reduction & Recycling
We minimise waste and recycle wherever possible aboard SV Summer Jo, reducing our environmental footprint both at sea and on shore.
-
Reef-Safe Products
All cleaning, catering, and guest amenities use reef-safe, environmentally responsible products to protect marine life.
-
Fuel Efficiency & Smart Navigation
We monitor and reduce fuel use through efficient route planning and careful voyage management.
-
Vessel Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures SV Summer Jo runs efficiently, conserving fuel and preventing unnecessary emissions.
-
Eco-Friendly Antifoul
We use high-quality, non-toxic antifoul alternatives and clean the hull manually to protect reef waters.
-
Responsible Waste-Water Systems
Our onboard waste-water treatment complies with strict environmental regulations to safeguard marine ecosystems.
-
Reef Monitoring Programs
We contribute to marine science through Eye on the Reef, Reef Health Surveys, and COTS Watch.
-
Local Conservation Support
We collaborate with conservation partners and research initiatives within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
-
Guest Sustainability Engagement
Guests are encouraged to offset travel emissions and adopt simple sustainability practices at home.
Our goal is to reduce our carbon footprint year-on-year, while supporting a regenerative future for reef tourism in the Whitsundays.

Respecting Sea Country
We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Whitsunday Islands and surrounding reefs, the Ngaro and Gia peoples, and recognise their continuing connection to land, sea and culture. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We are honoured to operate on Sea Country and to share its stories, history and cultural significance with our guests.
Responsible Diving & Snorkelling Practices
Exploring the reef is one of the most memorable parts of a Whitsunday Expeditions journey. To protect the fragile coral systems and marine life, we guide all guests in low-impact snorkelling and diving techniques, including:
-
Move slowly and calmly through the water — enjoy the moment.
-
Avoid kicking sand or touching coral with fins or equipment.
-
Never stand on or lean against coral formations.
-
Give marine life space — admire, do not chase or touch.
-
Avoid wearing gloves, which can encourage contact with the reef.
-
Do not feed fish or handle marine creatures.
-
Stay at least one metre away from giant clams and fixed coral structures.
-
Leave the reef exactly as you found it — take only memories.
-
Collect any litter you may see in the water (even if it isn’t yours).
By following these responsible reef practices, you help protect this extraordinary ecosystem so others may experience it for years to come.
