Meet the Reefs: A Guide to Summer Jo’s Outer Great Barrier Reef Dive Sites

The Whitsundays might be famous for its islands and beaches, but venture further offshore and an entirely different side of the region is waiting.
Aboard SV Summer Jo, our Outer Great Barrier Reef expeditions take you beyond the islands to remote reef systems, with each trip shaped by weather and sea conditions.
Here are some of the incredible reefs you could explore along the way.
Bait Reef

One of the best-known reefs in the Whitsundays, Bait Reef is famous for its iconic ‘Stepping Stones’ — a series of coral formations rising towards the surface. With clear tropical waters, vibrant coral gardens and plenty of marine life, it's a spectacular spot for both diving and snorkelling.
Elizabeth Reef
Further offshore, Elizabeth Reef gives you a taste of what makes Outer Reef diving so special.
Expect expansive coral landscapes and the chance to encounter everything from colourful reef fish to larger marine species cruising through the blue.
Kennedy Reef

Kennedy Reef is another Outer Great Barrier Reef location we can explore aboard Summer Jo.
Its coral gardens and diverse underwater environment make it an exciting stop for both certified divers and snorkellers.
Faith Reef
A favourite on our longer expeditions, Faith Reef offers another opportunity to experience the Great Barrier Reef away from the busier day-trip locations.
Jump in, explore the reef and then climb back aboard Summer Jo ready for the next site.
Seagull Reef

Seagull Reef adds even more variety to the adventure, with coral formations and tropical marine life making every dive or snorkel different from the last.
And that's exactly the point of an Outer Reef expedition — you never know what you'll find underwater.
No Two Expeditions Are the Same
Summer Jo's itineraries are intentionally flexible. Conditions on the Great Barrier Reef change, so our crew and Master select locations based on the weather, sea state and conditions at the time.

Depending on the voyage, we may also explore other Outer Reef locations including Trigger Reef and Knuckle Reef.
It means the reefs above aren't a checklist or guaranteed itinerary. They're part of a much bigger playground.
Go Beyond the Whitsundays
With Whitsunday Expeditions, the adventure doesn't stop at the islands.
