SS Yongala: The Shipwreck That Became One of the World’s Most Famous Dive Sites

Beneath the waters off Queensland lies one of Australia’s most remarkable dive sites.
The SS Yongala has spent more than a century beneath the surface, transforming from a shipwreck into a thriving underwater ecosystem and today, it’s a highlight of our 6-day dive expeditions aboard SV Summer Jo.

A Ship Frozen in Time
The SS Yongala sank during a cyclone in 1911 while travelling south from Mackay toward Townsville.
The wreck now rests on the seafloor off the Queensland coast and, because much of its structure remains intact, has become an extraordinary place to explore underwater.

As a protected historic wreck, divers experience the Yongala from the outside rather than entering it.
Why Is the Yongala So Famous?
It's not only the wreck itself that makes this dive special.
Over more than 100 years, the SS Yongala has become home to an incredible concentration of marine life. The wreck rises from the surrounding seabed, creating habitat and attracting species from across the area.
Divers may encounter turtles, rays, sea snakes, giant groupers, schools of fish and other large marine life, with every dive offering something different.

The Yongala is very different from a typical coral reef dive.
There's the sheer scale of the wreck, its history and the marine life surrounding it — all combining to create an experience that has earned the site an international reputation among divers.

Conditions can vary, and diving the Yongala requires an appropriate level of certification and experience.
Dive Yongala Aboard Summer Jo
Our 6-day, 5-night dive expedition aboard SV Summer Jo combines the SS Yongala with multiple days exploring the Outer Great Barrier Reef.

A Quick Note About Conditions:
As with any offshore adventure, the weather and sea conditions ultimately decide where we can dive. While the SS Yongala is a major highlight of our expeditions, a visit to the wreck can't be guaranteed. If conditions aren't suitable, our crew will adjust the itinerary to explore other incredible dive sites along the Great Barrier Reef.
Either way, there's plenty to discover beneath the surface!
